Time stops at Matheran

Matheran Echo Point Monkey April
Matheran Echo Point FriendsThe funny thing was, I had not even heard about this place before. Matheran, situated approximately 90 kms from Mumbai and 120 kms from Pune, is the smallest hill station in India. The most remarkable fact about Matheran has to be that motorized vehicles are not allowed here.

From Neral to Matheran by Toy-train

I visited this place with my very good friends Bijender, Parth and Vartika (in alphabetical order :P.) To get there we booked a cab for a day and it only cost us around 2000 rupees to and fro. As I have mentioned vehicles are not allowed in Matheran, we travelled till Neral in our cab and then took a Toy Train from there. The earlier you take the toy train the better, as it gets pretty hot later on. By the way I heard that the toy-train is closed during the monsoon season.

We reached Matheran around noon and although we weren’t tired, we decided to check into a resort as it was too hot for site seeing and we were getting hungry anyway. There are a lot of resorts in Matheran bustling throughout the year with tourists. After comparing the prices of two-three resorts, we checked into a resort named Horse-land.

In the evening we made a move from the resort.
Plenty of guides kept on offering to show us the attractions and lookout points (which are many), but we chose to explore the hill station on our own. In the shades of dusk, Matheran transformed into a magical place.

Matheran Dogs Stray
All the doggies we met! There were a lot of strays and they were very friendly. That orange doggie followed us everywhere, we named him Bittu.

Garden Matheran Scary Evening
Okay this is kind of a stalking photograph, but this garden looked intriguing. It reminds me of the book cover of 'Midnight in the garden of good and evil.'

Aww Bittu!

We covered Echo point, Chorlette Lake, and a place that we think was Lord Point. Our visit was only for a day, so as night approached we walked till 'Aman Lodge' to get to our cab. We visited this hill station in the last week of April, and I can only imagine how beautiful this place would be in the monsoons. With its pristine beauty and soothing
exquisiteness, Matheran is the perfect weekend getaway.

So tell me, what place near your city makes for a great escape?
