IN CONVERSATION WITH ANITA DONGRE | VOGUE WEDDING SHOW 2016

How has the process of designing bridal wear changed in recent times?
Brides today are looking for a contemporary look with a hint of tradition whilst still staying on trend with the cuts and colours. Today’s modern bride seeks elegance, style and comfort. A versatile ensemble, that doesn’t weigh her down and allows her to enjoy her own wedding as much as everyone else does. Which is why all my bridal wear is light to wear, while being a stunning tribute to tradition.

What are the predominant trends that are going to be seen in Vogue Wedding Show 2016 bridal wear this year?
A lot of prints, motifs and reinvented silhouettes teamed with heirloom crafts and traditional weaves.

Which is the most memorable bridal outfit that you ever designed?
Every bride of mine is special. It will be unfair to pick one as an iconic piece as every bride looks radiant and deserves to take centre stage and be the celebrity at her own wedding.

What is the most common mistake that a bride may make on her big day?
I think it is very important to be comfortable in what you wear, and let your personality shine through. Even the most vigilant brides can be steered off-course sometimes. I always believe that brides should choose an outfit that doesn’t weigh them down and hence all my lehengas are designed in a way that the bride can dance at her own wedding.

What elements have you added in your Vogue Wedding Show 2016 bridal collection for the bride who wants to wear a design which is relevant yet traditional?
Beautiful printed lehengas with pockets and Bohemian tops. The traditional bridal red is a major part of the collection along with classic silhouettes – hand woven Benares jackets with full circle skirts,, suits, flowy silhouettes for light occasion wear, etc.

Your top three trousseau tips for the smart bride?
-       I think each bride should definitely own an heirloom piece as a part of her trousseau
-       While accessories are very important, the bride must ensure that they do not go overboard. It is all about understated elegance and not overpowering bling
-       Keep one item in your entire look opulent, and let that be a statement piece of jewelry like a jadau choker or a raani haar.
